UW Music Faculty to Perform in Concert

February 27, 2008

The University of Wyoming Department of Music Faculty Concert Series will continue Thursday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center concert hall.

The concert will feature performances by violist James Przygocki and pianist Rubia Santos. Tickets cost $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. For more information or for tickets, call the Fine Arts Box office at (307) 766-6666 or visit www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

The evening will open with "Fairy Tale Pictures" (1851) by the Romantic composer Robert Schumann. Though there are no specific references to fairy tales, the short, evocative "pictures" call to mind images and feelings similar to stories from another time and place.

Following Schumann will be works by British composers Frank Bridge and Benjamin Britten. Bridge, a late romantic composer, is known for "Pensiero," a dark and brooding work. Britten, his most famous pupil, composed "Lachrymae," or "Tears," in 1950.

The second half of the program will begin with a suite of three dances by the modern Brazilian composer Cesar Guerre-Piexe. The pieces come from the northeastern part of Brazil. The program will then return to German Romantic style with a performance of the Sonata in E-Flat by Johannes Brahms. It was originally for clarinet and piano, and Brahms also wrote a version of this appealingly lyrical work for the viola.

Santos, a native of Brazil, is the newest member of the music department faculty, already has performed at numerous UW concerts. Przygocki, a professor of viola at UW, directs the UW String Project and is a member of the String Academy of Wyoming faculty.
