The Wyoming Humanities Council will host a series of free public lectures and mini courses about different aspects of Rome during the reign of Augustus.
"Rome and Augustus," the theme of this year's Summer Classics Institute, will begin at 7 p.m., June 12-16 in Room 186 of the University of Wyoming's College of Law Building.
The schedule of public lectures:
Sunday, June 12: "Vergil and His Many Backgrounds," Philip Holt, UW Modern and Classical Languages Department head.
Monday, June 13: "Herod the Great in Caesar Augustus' New World," Paul Flesher, UW Religious Studies Program director.
Tuesday, June 14: "The Politics of Freedom in Rome: Caesar and Augustus as Liberators," Kurt Raaflaub, emeritus professor of classics and history from Brown University.
Wednesday, June 15: "The Role of Peace in Roman Thought and Politics," Raaflaub.
Thursday, June 16: "The Poets and the Princeps: Horace, Ovid, Vergil and the Regime," Holt.
