A case study by University of Wyoming class of 2011 pharmacy graduates has been selected for publication in the first issue of "Remington PharmEd Cases," which will be released in 2012.

The authors are Amber Covey, from Ames, Iowa, and Teshia Sorensen, from Richfield, Utah, along with Christy Weiland, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice in the UW College of Health Sciences.

Their case study, "Consequences of Non-compliance: A Young Man With a Failing Heart," was also featured in the first "Remington PharmEd" newsletter that was distributed last spring to pharmacy schools nationwide.

In partnership with Remington, Pharmaceutical Press is developing "Remington PharmEd Cases," a new online educational resource for pharmacy instructors and students. Peer-reviewed and selected case studies will be among its core elements.

The team's case study involved a patient the students cared for last fall while completing an internal medicine rotation with Weiland at Poudre Valley Hospital, associated with the Fort Collins, Colo., Family Medicine Residency Program. The patient was a 27-year-old man with congenital heart disease who failed to qualify for a heart transplant because of non-compliance with his medication therapy.

"Covey and Sorensen provided excellent patient care for him and assisted in his drug therapy management," says Weiland.

Fourth-year students completing rotations with Weiland have the option to work with her on research/scholarship projects. The process involves compiling and writing the case and answering questions to assist faculty in citing the case in their teaching.
