University of Wyoming pharmacy student Sara Lookabill, from Scottsbluff, Neb., has received a 2011 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Walmart Scholars Award. She is the first UW recipient in more than eight years.
The award provides $1,000 travel scholarships to 75 student-faculty pairs from across the country. The goal is to strengthen recipients' research and scholarship skills for careers in academia.
Faculty mentor Suzanne Clark, assistant professor of pharmacology, will join Lookabill at the AACP Annual Meeting and Teachers Seminar July 9-13 in San Antonio, Texas.
"Sara is an outstanding student and an excellent candidate for this award, which encourages bright, hard-working students to consider careers in academics and research," says Clark. "She brings extensive leadership skills as class president and leadership at state and national levels, as well as research and scholarship accomplishments."
Lookabill attended the recent national Cardinal Health Student Leadership Conference, co-wrote a peer-reviewed case study and taught three lectures on diabetes to nursing and pharmacy students.
Lookabill and Clark's abstract, titled "Integrating Interprofessional Students in Emergency Preparedness Programs Anchored in a Rural/Frontier School of Pharmacy," was accepted for a poster presentation at the AACP meeting. Lookabill will also present a version of this poster at the Wyoming Pharmacy Association's annual meeting in Casper later this month.
Other abstract authors are Jennifer Steiner and Megan Saunders, both from UW School of Pharmacy students from Laramie; Beth Young from Albany County Public Health; and Bryon Hopper and Donna Artery from the Wyoming Department of Health. The team also worked with Maggie Moran and the UW Center for Service, Leadership and Community Engagement (SLCE).
