The Wyoming Engineering Society (WES) has selected University of Wyoming civil engineering senior Jakob Sumearll of Fort Collins, Colo., as the state’s Student Engineer of the Year.
He was chosen from students nominated as the top graduates in the eight UW College of Engineering and Applied Science programs (architectural, civil, chemical, petroleum, electrical, computer, mechanical and energy systems).
Sumearll received an unrestricted grant of $2,500, and each of the seven honorees received a $1,250 grant. WES sponsors all nominees to attend the annual convention to be recognized at the awards banquet.
The other top graduating engineering students honored, listed by hometown and program, were:
Burien, Wash. -- Elizabeth Smith, mechanical engineering.
Cheyenne -- Karolyn Hopfensperger, electrical engineering; Evan Lowry, petroleum engineering.
Killdeer, N.D. -- Ben Pelton, chemical engineering.
Laramie -- Todd Anderson, architectural engineering.
Littleton, Colo. -- Matthew Daniel, energy systems engineering.
New Delhi, India -- Karan Sodhi, computer engineering.
