An exhibition titled “Richard Notkin & Phoebe Toland” can be seen Sept. 7-Oct. 16 in the University of Wyoming Department of Art and Art History’s Visual Arts Gallery. An opening reception will be held Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the gallery, located in the Visual Arts Building on the corner of 22nd Street and Willett Drive.
Notkin is a full-time studio artist. His teapots, ceramic sculptures and tile murals are visual explorations in social and political commentary. For more than four decades, his work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Among his awards, Notkin has received three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
Toland is a printmaker whose work is closely connected to architecture, responding to urban sprawl and rapid growth in cities -- issues that are indicative of community dynamics as an expression of larger systems or networks. Toland has been awarded two Myrna Loy grants for artists, an Innovation Grant through the Montana Arts Council and a Gottlieb Foundation grant.
As part of the exhibition, Toland will present a visiting artist talk Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 111 of the Visual Arts Building. Notkin will present a visiting artist talk Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6:30 p.m. in Room 111 of the Visual Arts Building.
The Visual Arts Gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The exhibition, reception and art talks are free and open to the public. For more information, email Margaret Haydon, mkhaydon@uwyo.edu.
