The Cap and Gown chapter at the University of Wyoming was among 45 collegiate chapters honored for its excellence at the recent 2015 Mortar Board National Conference in Phoenix, Ariz.
The group was presented the Silver Torch Award, an honor that is given to chapters that achieve all national criteria and deadlines while promoting scholarship, leadership and meaningful service to their institutions.
David Whitman, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been an adviser for the UW chapter for 22 years. He says the university’s chapter has received the Gold or Silver Torch award almost every year.
Mortar Board is the premier national honor society recognizing college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown to 231 chartered collegiate chapters with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation.
UW’s Cap and Gown chapter, chartered in 1933, has 48 members for the 2015-16 year.
Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities, and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community.
