German and U.S. Music to be Performed at UW Dec. 10

The final “Germany Meets the U.S.” program will feature “German and U.S. Music” Saturday, Dec. 10, at 3 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The event is free and open to the public.

This music bridge across the Atlantic features German and American compositions spanning 300 years by noted composers J.S. Bach, Virgil Thomson, Aaron Jay Kernis, Johannes Brahms and John Corigliano.

“German and U.S. Music” is the seventh and final event related to the grant, “Germany Meets the U.S.,” from the German Embassy that UW Department of Communication and Journalism Associate Professor Kristen Landreville and Professor Tracey Patton received.

Featured in the performance will be violinist John Fadial, UW Department of Music professor, and English pianist Andrew Harley.

Fadial has appeared on four continents as chamber musician and soloist. He has toured internationally for the U.S. State Department as a United States Artistic Ambassador, and has served as concertmaster of the North Carolina Opera, the Colorado Festival, the Menuhin Festival Orchestra of Saumur, the Heidelberg Schloss-Spiele, the Eastern Music Festival and Greensboro Symphony Orchestra.

He has won prizes in the American String Teachers Association Solo Competition and the Baltimore Chamber Awards, and has performed at the Phillips Collection; the Terrace Theater of the Kennedy Center; the Salle Poirel; the University of Blagoevgrad; and Bulgaria.

As a recording artist, Fadial was a semifinalist for the Grammy Award for best Chamber Music Performance of 2007 for the CD “Where Does Love Go: Chamber Music of Mark Engebretson” on the Innova label.

Harley spent his early childhood in West Germany, later returning to England, where he attended the Chetham's School of Music, Oxford University and the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

He received his doctorate in collaborative piano from the University of Southern California, and served as Distinguished Professor of Piano at the University of North Carolina. He teaches at the Levine School in Washington, D.C., as well as Juilliard School in New York.

Harley maintains his German connections with regular teaching and performances at the annual Dusseldorf festival.
