UW’s EORI Launches Guidebook for Geology of Alcova Reservoir

The rock layers surrounding Natrona County’s Alcova Reservoir are not only breathtaking to see; they also are windows to a portion of Earth’s history.

Stephen Whitaker, a senior petroleum geologist with the University of Wyoming’s Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute (EORI), has studied that history extensively as part of EORI’s mission to provide information to oil and gas producers. In a new publication, he shares insights and observations for members of the public interested in Alcova’s fascinating geology.

The new “Guidebook to the Geology of Lake Alcova, Natrona County, Wyoming” -- which is available online here -- provides a lay audience with photos, graphics, charts and a brief explanation of what the area’s geology reveals.

The guidebook provides details on the rock layers visible at Alcova in relation to the history of the North American continent, from Precambrian granite formed around 2.8 billion years ago to sandstone and volcanic ash deposited around 35 million years ago.

“Alcova Reservoir offers spectacular views of well-exposed rock outcrops representing a vast expanse of geologic time,” Whitaker says. “This guidebook is meant to help those touring the lake by boat to appreciate, and perhaps better understand, what the colorful rock layers are indicating about the evolution of this part of Wyoming.”

For its part, EORI shares the guidebook as part of its commitment to facilitating technology transfer through publications and oral presentations. The institute’s primary mission and focus are to facilitate meaningful, measurable and economically viable solutions to increase recoverable reserves and production of oil and natural gas in Wyoming that otherwise may not be realized.
