Gonzalo Teppa Quintet to Perform at UW Oct. 2

The University of Wyoming’s Jazz Studies program will present the Gonzalo Teppa Quintet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall.

Before the concert, a jazz studio class will be offered at 5 p.m. in Room 1050 of the Performing Arts Center.

Teppa, a Venezuelan bassist, and his quintet will perform a collection of his compositions, featuring contemporary jazz, Latin American music (Venezuelan, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban) blues and free jazz.

The quintet features Greg Harris, vibraphone, piano and percussion; Alex Heffron, guitar; Ike Spivak, saxophone, flute and clarinet; and UW Department of Music Assistant Professor Andy Wheelock, drums.

Teppa is a two-time Latin Grammy nominee for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album” and “Best Latin Jazz Album” for work on the recordings “Tiempo” by Linda Briceño and “3rd Element” by Luisito Quintero. He was named “Best Jazz Soloist” by DownBeat magazine in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and he received the “Best Jazz Soloist” award at the Greeley Jazz Festival in 2004 and 2005.
