Applications for UW’s Community Engaged Faculty Institute Now Open

Applications for the University of Wyoming’s 2023-24 Community Engaged Faculty Institute are now being accepted. The deadline to apply is at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17.

The Community Engaged Faculty Institute seeks to create a cohort of faculty fellows who will work together to advance UW’s efforts to develop service-learning opportunities for the university’s students. Selected fellows will receive a stipend of $1,000 for participating in six sessions.

Selected faculty fellows will commit to an orientation cohort meeting in December; to be available for four 90-minute cohort workshops during January-March; and to a final public presentation of their syllabi in May, says Erin Olsen Pueblitz, the new director of UW’s Office of Engagement and Outreach.

The Community Engaged Faculty Institute seeks to advance goals identified from UW’s recent application for a Carnegie Foundation Elective Classification for Community Engagement designation. Goals also are included from UW’s strategic plan to enhance institutional excellence, including rewarding teaching excellence, enhancing student success and strengthening relationships with external partners.

The faculty fellows’ work will provide a roadmap to enhance service-learning opportunities at UW, Olsen Pueblitz says. Sessions include foundational knowledge of service-learning course construction, implementation and assessment.

Program objectives include exploring and understanding the foundation of service learning as high-impact pedagogy; learning the process for developing and maintaining mutually beneficial and reciprocal community-campus partnerships and relationships; developing strategies for designing and implementing service-learning courses; and understanding risk management processes, student learning outcomes that incorporate meaningful critical reflection, and assessing community-engaged learning experiences.

Participants will create a written plan/syllabus presentation to share with the group upon completion of the sessions. Additional opportunities will be available for participants to share their service-learning experiences at various workshops and serve as mentors for future institute cohorts.
