National ROTC Project GO Meeting Hosted by UW in November

Project GO (global officer), a nationwide program open to all qualified ROTC students, will hold its annual meeting next month at the University of Wyoming.

UW, in cooperation with the Defense Language and National Security Education Office, and institute of International Education, will host the meeting Sunday-Wednesday, Nov. 5-8.

Project GO offers fully funded opportunities in critical language education, overseas study and cross-cultural experience for qualified ROTC students nationwide. Through the program, future military officers develop linguistic and cross-cultural communication skills required for effective leadership for all services in the 21st century operational environment.

Since 2007, Project GO has provided approximately 6,500 students with opportunities to study culture and 19 languages, both domestically and abroad in 33 countries around the world.

Gen. Peter Schoomaker, a retired four-star U.S. Army general who served as the Army’s 35th chief of staff, is the Project GO keynote speaker. He also is an alumnus of UW’s ROTC program. Schoomaker will deliver comments at an invitation-only dinner in the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center Monday, Nov. 6.

UW’s School of Politics, Public Affairs and International Studies, which houses the Arabic and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Studies program, and UW Project GO, are among hosts of the national meeting.

“The UW Arabic and MENA department is honored to have been named hosts of the 2023 Project GO annual meeting and the ACTFL and modified OPI provider for the first time in the Northern Rocky Mountain Region,” say Eric Nigh and Shawn Bunning. “We are pleased to highlight the relationship we have with the UW campus and U.S. Department of Defense.”

Nigh and Bunning are director and deputy director, respectively, of the MENA Program. ACTLF and OPI stand for American Counsel on the Teaching of Foreign Language and Oral Proficiency Interview.
