UW’s Live Edge Trio Hosts Trumpet Player John Lake Nov. 6

John Lake, Seth Lewis, Ben Markley and Andy WheelockFresh off its debut record release, the University of Wyoming’s Live Edge Trio will host New York City trumpet player and composer John Lake Monday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall.

Tickets are $3. A nominal processing fee will be charged for each ticket. To purchase tickets, visit the Performing Arts box office, call (307) 766-6666 or go online at www.tix.com/ticket-sales/uwyo/6984.

The concert features reimagined standards and originals by Lake and the UW trio.

Live Edge Trio is composed of UW Department of Music faculty members Seth Lewis, bass; Ben Markley, piano; and Andy Wheelock, drums. The trio writes and arranges music that reflects and builds upon the rich history of the jazz piano trio. Each member offers a unique and distinct musical perspective, which comes together as “hard-swinging, harmonically rich and infectiously groovy tunes.”

An award-winning composer and arranger, Markley is in high demand across the country and has received critical acclaim for his recordings. Lewis, an award-winning bassist, has performed all over the world and has appeared on dozens of recording projects. Wheelock is sought after as a drummer, percussionist and educator.

Lake maintains a busy performance schedule as an in-demand lead trumpet player, jazz soloist and recording artist. His acoustic jazz septet, The John Lake Ensemble, will release a new album early next year, which documents a series of live video recordings produced in Brooklyn, N.Y. His critically acclaimed debut album, “Seven Angels,” released in 2020, consists of a diverse mix of contemporary originals and modern arrangements of jazz classics.

Lake’s recent large-ensemble performances and recordings have included lead, section and solo trumpet performances with some of the top musicians in the country.

He has performed with orchestras of several Broadway musical productions. He currently performs as lead trumpet and featured soloist on the Joyce Theater’s touring Lindy Hop show, “SW!NG OUT,” with the Eyal Vilner Big Band. He has performed and recorded with numerous pop and theater icons, including Lauryn Hill and the Fugees; Mr. Carmack; Mac Miller; Alex Newell; Marin Mazzie; Josh Groban and Kristin Chenoweth.

Lake’s trumpet can be heard on the theme song for the NBA on ESPN, as well as national advertising campaigns for Nieman Marcus, Heineken, Panera Bread, Swisslos and others.
