UW Students Invited to Participate in Wyoming Pi Days

It’s time to celebrate all things mathematics.

University of Wyoming students are invited to participate in Wyoming Pi Days, a series of three “Pizza and Problem Solving” (PPS) evenings when students get together, eat pizza and work on a series of mathematics/logic problems.

These evenings -- March 21, March 26 and April 1 -- will culminate in an examination called Pi Day Competition, a three-hour exam consisting of problems of varying difficulty April 6. The three PPS evenings will take place in Room 29 of Ross Hall beginning at 5:10 p.m.

“This event is a good opportunity to meet other students with common interests and to have fun working together on engaging problems,” says Jorge Flores, an assistant lecturer of mathematics and one of the coordinators of Wyoming Pi Days.

Wyoming Pi Days is hosted and sponsored by the UW Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The event, for UW undergraduate students of all majors interested in mathematics, is an homage to the number pi, which is approximately 3.14.

Other event coordinators from the department are Tyrrell McAllister, an associate professor, and Christina Knox, an assistant lecturer.

All participants in the Pi Day Competition who attend at least one PPS evening will receive a choice of a mathematics/logic book -- from a list recommended by mathematics and statistics faculty -- and a T-shirt. Additionally, competition winners will receive certificates of achievement and a grand prize.
