UW’s Wyoming Center on Aging Offers Healthy U Cancer Workshops

The Wyoming Center on Aging (WyCOA) at the University of Wyoming, in collaboration with Ivinson Memorial Hospital and the Wyoming Department of Health, will offer a six-session Healthy U workshop series titled “Cancer: Thriving and Surviving in Laramie, Wyoming.”

The workshop series will take place at Ivinson Memorial Hospital Thursdays -- March 21-April 25 -- from 3-5:30 p.m. Anyone who is affected by a cancer diagnosis; recently received a diagnosis; actively being treated; or in remission is invited to attend this free six-week program. Caregivers of people diagnosed with cancer also are welcome to attend.

During the workshops, participants receive support from trained leaders and other workshop participants to learn practical ways to manage the effect cancer has on their lives; learn about nutrition and exercise options; practice decision-making, problem-solving and action planning; and learn better ways to communicate about their conditions with doctors and family members. Healthy U participants learn skills that help them take control of their health condition and deal with the frustration, fatigue and pain that can accompany cancer.

Healthy U is Wyoming’s coordination of a suite of self-management health programs licensed by the Self-Management Resource Center, an outside entity. Healthy U includes the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program, Diabetes Self-Management Program, Tomando Control de su Salud and Cancer: Thriving and Surviving.
