Winter Issue of UWyo Magazine Highlights UW Outreach and Engagement

woman with books in front of an open highwayThe winter issue of UWyo Magazine, the University of Wyoming’s flagship publication, highlights how the university touches every corner of the state with outreach and engagement programming.

“To know what the people of Wyoming need and want, we must constantly be listening, responding and collaborating,” UW President Ed Seidel says. “We have made such engagement a top priority during my time as president, and our current strategic plan aims to take us to new levels of performance in serving the people of Wyoming.”

Feature articles include:

-- “For the People”: Pathways from Prison, legal clinics, the Ann Simpson Artmobile, the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic, WIND ECHO for Families and the Family Medicine Residency Programs.

-- “Just for Kids”: Science Initiative outreach, Latina youth partnership, Wyoming Trustees Education Initiative/Wyoming Early Childhood Outreach Network, Malcolm Wallop Civic Engagement Program and the Science and Math Teaching Center.

-- “Growing Business”: IMPACT 307, the Wyoming Business Resource Network and some of the businesses it has helped, including Infinite Outdoors and BAST Manufacturing.

-- “Aiding Industry”: Wyoming’s CarbonSAFE projects, Center for Biogenic Natural Gas Research and Cowboy Clean Fuels, outdoor recreation and tourism, coal-based asphalt, Wyoming IDeA Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence and the Plant Growth and Phenotyping Facility.

-- “Thriving Lands”: Institute for Managing Annual Grasses Invading Natural Ecosystems, research and extension centers, Wyoming Conservation Corps, the Wyoming Bird Initiative for Resilience and Diversity, and the Dr. Kurt S. Bucholz Irrigation Science Excellence Fund.

Additional sections cover alumni updates, the Shepard Symposium on Social Justice, sports camps for kids, the new Neltje Center for Excellence in Creativity and the Arts, profiles, events, news and the power of philanthropy.

Student Tucker Norman, of Pine Bluffs, is involved in UW’s Ethics Club and its SparkTank competition for nonprofit organizations, which is highlighted in this issue of the magazine.

“SparkTank is all about being a part of something bigger than oneself,” he says. “When you see the impact you can have in the community by being a part of a group that cares for the advancement and the well-being of others, it is inspiring and life-changing.”

This special issue of UWyo Magazine coincides with the university’s new designation for community engagement by the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The 2024 Carnegie Elective Classification is a highly-sought-after designation, particularly by land-grant universities such as UW.

UWyo Magazine is produced three times a year -- winter, spring and fall -- in a partnership with the UW Alumni Association. Read these stories and many more in the winter issue at www.uwyo.edu/uwyo-mag.
