UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Casper Star-Tribune and Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that UW will return to traditional on-campus learning with activities this fall semester due largely to encouraging numbers regarding COVID-19 infections, along with vaccine availability and acceptance. Among media outlets publishing UW’s release were WyoToday.com, Buckrail, Laramie Live and SweetwaterNOW.

The “water bear” research of UW Assistant Professor Thomas Boothby on how the microscopic animals, known as tardigrades, can withstand extreme conditions was featured in The Guardian. The article noted that the research could one day help in the development of COVID vaccines. Wyoming News Now, The Cody Enterprise and Sheridan Media published UW’s release on the announcement.

The Laramie Boomerang featured Kara Pratt, program director for neuroscience at UW, on the importance of more women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

Crypto bank Avanti, led by CEO and UW graduate Caitlin Long, recently raised $37 million from Series A investors as it prepares to take its digital banking operations online later this year, according to Yahoo! Finance. The UW Foundation was among entities participating in the funding round.

The Rocket Miner, Buckrail and Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that John Koprowski, dean of UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, led a project that discovered a jaguar presence near the U.S.-Mexico border. Koprowski made the discovery with a University of Arizona student who he advised during his tenure as a professor at that college. The Arizona Daily Star and Fox 10 Phoenix published similar articles.

The New York Times featured former UW Police Department Sgt. Aaron Appelhans, who is the first Black sheriff in Wyoming. The Albany County sheriff also is a former UW Admissions representative. Black Enterprise published a similar article.

UW psychology Professor Ben Wilkowski and his colleagues’ research analyzing goal-related words used by English speakers was noted in a Ladders News article, titled “These are the 4 most powerful motivators of success.” The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology first published the research.

Eos, a science news website, noted that UW Assistant Professor Di Yang was among research scientists who found that mass bird die-offs in the western and central U.S. are linked to wildfires and toxic gases. GeoHealth first published the research paper.

Robert Field, a UW senior research scientist, has made important field contributions in the use of the POD sampler, an instrument used to accurately sample pollution levels. The Rocket Miner published UW’s release on Field’s work.

In a Wyoming News Now article on proper nutrition to prevent chronic diseases, UW Extension’s Cent$ible Nutrition Program was mentioned as a valuable resource for nutritional tips and recipes. Oil City News published a similar article.
