Research Interests

Jim King joined the UW political science faculty in 1992 and previously taught at the University of Memphis. In addition to “American and Wyoming Government,” he regularly offers elective classes on American politics, including “U.S. Presidency” and “Seminar in American Political Institutions.” During election years he is frequently interviewed by national and state media outlets about Wyoming politics.

Jim’s interest in American politics extends from the classroom to his research, which focuses on various aspects of the presidency and American state politics. Current research focuses on the effects of congressional candidates attacking the president or endorsing the president’s policies during midterm election campaigns and on transitions between presidential administrations. He is a co-author of The Equality State: Government and Politics in Wyoming, and the author/co-author of articles published in The Journal of Politics, Social Science Quarterly, Presidential Studies Quarterly, Legislative Studies Quarterly, White House Studies, State Politics and Policy Quarterly, Publius and other scholarly journals.

In 2014 Jim served as president of the Southwestern Political Science Association and was the recipient of the College of Arts and Science’s Exemplary Faculty Award.  Previous UW awards include Promoting Intellectual Engagement in the First Year (PIE) Award, “Top Prof” Award of the University of Wyoming Mortar Board Society, and A&S Extraordinary Merit for Research.
