The Principal Preparation Program is a comprehensive internship-based leadership program leading to a Master of Arts degree in Education with an option in Educational Administration and a cognate in K-12 Educational Leadership as well as potential Wyoming certification as a K-12 principal. To be certified by PTSB as a principal in Wyoming, you must hold or be able to obtain a Wyoming teaching certificate and have at least three years of teaching in a school setting. To be admitted to the program, applicants must have at least 2 years of teaching experience.

Program Details

This outreach master's degree program is 33 credit hours. Focusing on our mission to develop effective educational leaders and researchers, the program offers a flexible delivery. In Casper, the four core courses are scheduled for three weekends, usually Friday night and Saturday, and may include video conferencing or online components. The remaining courses are offered through various means (online, videoconferencing, and face-to-face). In addition, all of the courses are offered online. Please see the course schedule. Please note, out of state students should check with their state PTSB to ensure the program meets eligibility requirements for principal certification in their own state.

How to Apply

To be considered for admission to the Master of Arts degree program, an applicant must have met the GPA requirement (3.0 in Bachelor of Arts degree program). In addition, applicants must have a minimum of 2 years teaching experience and demonstrated potential for leadership at the school level.

There are two application deadlines for this program: January 15 (applying for Summer or Fall semester program admittance) and September 15 (applying for Spring semester program admittance).

*If you are applying for the Spring 2016 deadline, please be available to come to the UW campus in Laramie on Monday, October 19th, 2015. Your presence is required for Interview Day.

Step 1: Apply to UW and Professional Studies through the online applicant portal

  1. Click here to access the UW graduate applicant portal and in your application, please use the corresponding application admittance semester indicated above.
  2. After completing the initial information page, you will receive an email from the system including a link and your temporary username and password
  3. Please complete the contact, academic, residency information, etc.
  4. Submit the $50 application fee
  5. Submit ALL required documents to the online document portal (applications with missing documents will not be considered)
    • The following are required documents for this program application:
      • Unofficial copies of transcripts (official copies should be sent to UW Admissions)
      • Copy of current teaching certificate
      • A completed principal program application
      • superintendent approval form signed by the superintendent of the district where you plan to perform your internship (scan and upload)
      • A letter of intent describing career goals related to school leadership
      • Current recommendation letters addressing leadership skills from three different referees (the portal will send a request to each of them after you enter their email addresses):
        • two from referees who are familiar with your leadership skills
        • current principal
      • A current resume
  6. Agree to admissions terms and submit your application

Step 2: Submit official copies of transcripts to UW Admissions

Official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions should be requested and sent to UW Admissions: University of Wyoming Admissions – 1000 E. University Ave. – Laramie, WY 82071

Applications are reviewed and recommendations for admittance are made approximately one month after the application deadline.
