Master's Degree in Educational Administration, K-12 Educational Leadership

Domestic Students: GPA: 3.0 in Bachelors GRE: no requirement

GRE: 147 min on each subtest

and 4.0 min on analytical writing

TOEFL: 550 min written or 80 min online, OR

IELTS : 6.5 min overall score

The Principal Preparation Program is a comprehensive internship-based leadership program leading to a Master of Arts degree in Education with an option in Educational Administration and a cognate in K-12 Educational Leadership as well as potential Wyoming certification as a K-12 principal. To be certified by PTSB as a principal in Wyoming, you must hold or be able to obtain a Wyoming teaching certificate and have at least three years of teaching in a school setting. To be admitted to the program, applicants must have at least 2 years of teaching experience.

International Students: Welcome and thank you for your interest in our program! Either a TOEFL score or an IELTS score is acceptable. We require a minimum score of 80 for the online TOEFL exam, with minimum scores of 20 in each subset, and the score must be at least two years current. For the IELTS exam, we require a  minimum overall score of 6.5, with minimum scores of 6 in each subset, and the score must be at least two years current.

Program Details

This outreach master's degree program is 33 credit hours. Focusing on our mission to develop effective educational leaders and researchers, the program offers a flexible delivery. In Casper, the four core courses are scheduled for three weekends, usually Friday night and Saturday, and may include video conferencing or online components. The remaining courses are offered through various means (online, videoconferencing, and face-to-face). In addition, all of the courses are offered online. Please see the course schedule. Please note, out of state students should check with their state PTSB to ensure the program meets eligibility requirements for principal certification in their own state.

Additional outreach course fees:
$25 per credit is charge for all courses delivered through Outreach.

How to Apply

To be considered for admission to the Master of Arts degree program, an applicant must have met the GPA requirement (3.0 in Bachelor of Arts degree program) and must have a minimum of 2 years teaching experience and demonstrated potential for leadership at the school level. Successful applicants for the University of Wyoming graduate programs in Educational Leadership typically have strong references, documented evidence of potential for academic excellence, and focused career goals that align with the administrative and leadership content of our programs. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate that they not only possess the required academic abilities to handle the theoretical and practical aspects of a graduate program but who also show attention to detail and thoughtfulness throughout the entire application process.

There are two application deadlines for this program: January 15 (applying for Fall semester program admittance) and September 15 (applying for Spring semester program admittance).

Step 1: Apply to UW and Professional Studies through the online applicant portal

  1. Click here to access the UW graduate applicant portal and in your application, please use the corresponding application admittance semester indicated above.
  2. After completing the initial information page, you will receive an email from the system including a link and your temporary username and password.
  3. Please complete the contact, academic, residency information, etc.
  4. Submit the $50 application fee.
  5. Submit ALL required documents to the online document portal (applications with missing documents will not be considered).
    • The following are required documents for this program application:
      • A letter of intent describing career goals related to school leadership
      • A current resume
      • Copy of current teaching certificate
      • A completed principal program application
      • superintendent approval form signed by the superintendent of the district where you plan to perform your internship (scan and upload)
      • Current recommendation letters addressing leadership skills from three different referees (the portal will send a request to each of them after you enter their email addresses):
        • two from referees who are familiar with your leadership skills
        • current principal
  6. Agree to admissions terms and submit your application

Step 2: Submit official copies of transcripts to UW Admissions

Official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions must be requested and sent to UW Admissions: University of Wyoming Admissions – 1000 E. University Ave. – Laramie, WY 82071

Applications are reviewed and recommendations for admittance are made approximately one month after the application deadline.
