About Exercise is Medicine®

Exercise is Medicine® (EIM) is a global health initiative managed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Problem and Solution

Problem: Physical inactivity is a growing issue in today's society and can contribute to a number of health issues including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, depression and anxiety, and much more. Thus, it is well known that physical activity and exercise are beneficial to an individual's overall health and well-being. Despite this, the majority of college students do no engage in the recommended amount of daily physical activity, and many physicians do not go over exercise and physical activity recommendations with their patients or include physical activity as a vital sign.

Solution: With such a big transition in college students' lives, it is necessary to start a daily exercise/physical activity routine. For those who do no have this daily routine, we can prescribe exercise and physical activity during visits to Student Health Services. For those who are meeting recommendations, events and activities designed to maintain regular physical activity can be implemented.

Mission and Vision

The vision of EIM On Campus is to see all campus and community members across multiple disciplines discover, share and adopt the principles that will change the culture of chronic disease prevention and management campus-wide.

The mission of EIM On Campus is to foster collaborative relationships and leadership on campus between exercise, health and other disciplines that support the EIM On Campus vision and goals.

Exercise is Medicine - On Campus at the University of Wyoming

Currently at the University of Wyoming (UW) there is a collaborative effort among a leadership group (Campus Recreation, Student Health, the Division of Kinesiology and Health, and many other faculty and students on campus) to initiate EIM on Campus at the University of Wyoming.  To achieve this, the mission of the leadership group is to establish the EIM foundation at UW to support sustainable and long-term chronic disease prevention and wellness initiatives across campus.
