English Teacher Education|College of Education

Welcome to English Education at UW!

Our professors strive to produce English and Language Arts educators who are leaders and innovators in the field.  All graduates earn a Bachelor's Degree in English Education (grades 6-12) AND a concurrent major in English.  A concurrent major will ensure that graduates are "highly qualified" teachers and will expand career possibilities.

Our English education program is Nationally Recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and NCATE.  The program underwent a rigorous accreditation process and is continually assessed to ensure that the NCATE teacher education standards are maintained.

The program is designed to prepare students for teaching English/Language Arts while perfecting their own literary analysis and writing skills.  Students will receive a well-rounded knowledge of pedagogy, assessment, and special education with an ongoing emphasis on technology and multicultural education.  Throughout the program, authentic classroom experiences are embedded.  Students will also take courses in linguistics, literature, and a foreign language.

Graduates will leave the program with the knowledge and confidence to teach students how to analyze, understand, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts with differing purposes, audiences, points of view, and cultural contexts.  Graduates will also be capable to teach students to communicate their thoughts while being creative and reflective in their writing process.  Most of all, graduates will teach young adults to be excited about the written word and appreciate it as a source of knowledge and personal fulfillment.

For those who already have a Bachelor's Degree in English and are interested in becoming certified to teach, we offer a Post-Baccalaureate Program that will lead to initial Wyoming teacher certification. The credits earned in this program can also be applied to a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, if you choose to pursue a graduate degree.
