John Spitler spent his youth in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. After receiving a BE in Chemical Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1977 and a year of graduate work in Chemical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, he moved to Jackson, Wyoming in the fall of 1978 where he discovered the great outdoors. After 5 adventurous years filled exclusively with climbing, skiing, paddling and supported primarily through carpentry, he returned to the University of Wyoming on a part-time basis splitting his time between Laramie and Jackson. He earned a MS in Mathematics in 1988 that concentrated in Combinatorics and continued in the PhD program studying Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Modeling. In the fall of 1994 as a PhD ABD, he accepted a position as an Assistant Research Scientist at the Institute for Scientific Computation (ISC) housed within the Department of Mathematics at UW. During his six year tenure at ISC, he discovered a great satisfaction in working with students, and as a result became a Lecturer in Mathematics in the fall of 2000.
