UW-E4

A Great Educator Preparation Program Doesn't Stand Still

The University of Wyoming groundbreaking Enterprise for Elevating Educational Excellence (UW-E4®) combines multiple innovations in educator preparation to prepare preeminent educators. It provides a framework for the student journey from career exploration, broad-based experiential learning, and embedded practice in Wyoming schools and other settings, to continuing support after entry into the profession. 

Access, quality, and measurement are at the heart of UW-E4. Partners throughout the state are in on building it. Networks of schools, early childhood programs, college deans, and national, state, and district leaders are contributing and collaborating. Unprecedented distance delivery will make education for educators available from Buffalo to Bonderant, Sundance to Saratoga, Ethete to Wapati, and points in between and beyond.

UW-E4 is evidence-based. UW-E4 is scaleable, sustainable, and designed to be to be nimble. Improvement cycles akin to the Plan-Do-Study-Act systems pioneered by industry giant (and UW alumnus) W. Edwards Deming are being fine-tuned for continuous improvement of every aspect of the UW-E4 educator preparation program.

Why Aim Higher?

Teachers matter most. Research shows teacher quality is the number one school-related predictor of student achievement. (See Research Basis.)

Too many teachers leave. High-quality educator preparation is a key predictor of teacher retention and career longevity. (See Research Basis.)

Wyoming wants the best teachers. Results from town hall meetings and surveys demonstrate that teacher quality is a top priority throughout the state. (See Research Basis.)

The UW Board of Trustees launched the Trustees Education Initiative to produce the nation's highest-quality teachers, transform educator preparation, and enrich the P-12 education system in Wyoming. UW teachers will become masters of their craft, growing their students' potential to make vibrant contributions in communities, families, professions, and an array of endeavors.

UW-E4 Starts with Exploration

UW will recruit high-quality and highly motivated students. They may come from early exposure in high school, from community colleges, other fields, or other majors. Exposure through UW-E4 will increase awareness, and high-quality candidates will gain commitment to the profession.

Experiential Learning Starts Early

UW-E4 creates a learning experience that enables students to demonstrate and apply competencies that are most needed in the classroom. Broad exposure to grade bands, subjects, and specialties helps students find their spark.

Embedded Practice Prepares Pre-Service Candidates

UW-E4 includes flexible residencies that build on instructional methods so students gain hands-on clinical experience to prepare them for the profession. Residency opportunities are expanded throughout the state, and induction mentors are trained by distance delivery.

Entry Into the Profession is Supported

A collaborative community of teachers is supported by an exceptional induction model that drives satisfaction and retention in the profession.
