Wyoming Coaching Laboratory

In Wyoming school districts, instructional facilitators or coaches work with great teachers to help them develop their professional practice. Wyoming Coaching Laboratory (WYCOLA), in its second year in 2019, coaches the coaches, as well as in-service K-12 teachers, curriculum directors from Wyoming school districts, and education majors from UW and community colleges.

WYCOLA begins with a two-week summer institute in Laramie, where educational professionals come to explore and unpack the complex work of teaching. A key feature is a "laboratory" classroom in which a master teacher teaches fifth- and sixth-grade learners while other WYCOLA participants observe remotely. This allows participants to define and explore core aspects of instructional practice, instructional coaching, and mentoring through activities grounded directly in the classroom experience.

WYCOLA’s successful model of partnership and professional development is expected to guide the preparation of mentors in the Trustees Education Initiative UW-E4® framework. Residency and internship mentors will support College of Education preservice teachers in the embedded practice (E3 or student teaching) phase of the student journey. Induction mentors are highly skilled Wyoming teachers who support graduates during their first two years of teaching practice (E4, entry into the profession).

The Trustees Education Initiative recognizes that high-quality teachers matter more to student achievement than any other school-related factor. WYCOLA aims to enhance teaching at all levels through improved instructional coaching and mentoring in Wyoming schools and stronger partnerships between UW, community colleges, and Wyoming school districts. Wyoming Coaching Laboratory is developing one of the nation's preeminent instructional coaching program.
