Safe Zone is a training program on campus that provides an open and safe discussion of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and queer communities. This training allows for introspection and thought on various aspects of the LGBTQ community via a discussion about tolerance and acceptance. Safe Zone aims to educate individuals on issues related to the LGBTQ community and through this, trains participants to become LGBTQ Allies. Safe Zone at the University of Wyoming offers a variety of training sessions that cover topics from inequalities in the everyday lives of LGBTQ individuals to healthcare issues specific to members of the LGBTQ communities.
The schedule for spring 2014 is set! Come join us for a training! Free food is provided.
We are happy to schedule individual and group trainings if any of the provided times do not work. We can also develop a specific training for your group, organization, classroom, faculty, or staff. The Safe Zone 101 Training is a training session that discusses the stereotypes that surround the LGBTQIA community and the impacts these stereotypes have on the community and the terminology and language regarding the LGBTQIA community and the impacts of the language used. This session will also address some of the inequalities faced by the LGBTQIA community and how to create and promote a safe zone for LGBTQIA individuals.
The Safe Zone Gender Identity 101 training session explores some of the definitions regarding gender identity, gender expression, and sexuality, as well as various components of lived experiences from individuals who are gender minorities. In addition, this training will help participants to understand how gender minorities have influenced LGBTQ culture and American history.
The Safe Zone Advanced Ally training is an interactive, activity-heavy training that will train participants to understand what it means to be an LGBTQ ally and how to be an LGBTQ ally. This training will also give participants a better understanding of heterosexual and cisgender privilege and how this relates to being an ally. Finally, this training will teach participants how to create a “safe zone” for members of the LGBTQ community.
