University Studies Program - 2015

In 2010 Provost Myron Allen published a white paper calling for the review of the USP 2003 University Studies Program.  The paper launched a series of three task forces to review and implement an outcomes based program.  This website provides the latest information on the launch of USP2015 in Fall 2015.

Background

In 2011, the first USP Stage 1 Task Force recommended a set of student learning outcomes for the UW baccalaureate degree largely based on the Essential Learning Outcomes developed by the Association of American Colleges and Universities as part of its LEAP campaign (Liberal Education and America's Promise). These outcomes were organized in three broad categories:breadth of knowledge, skills and competencies, and personal and social responsibility.

The USP Stage 2 Task Force adopted the list of learning outcomes developed by the Stage 1 Task Force with some minor modifications. The three broad categories were preserved, and with some combining of outcomes, 15 student learning outcomes emerged in the final Task Force 2 report.

Neither of the first two task forces developed definitions of the learning outcomes nor criteria for how the outcomes would be demonstrated or achieved. Because these student learning outcomes are the foundation of a revised USP, it was essential that the Stage 3 Task Force began its work with the development of concrete definitions and criteria for how the outcomes would be demonstrated, as well as determining where the learning outcomes would be taught and assessed.

The Stage 3 Task Force spent three months drafting, reviewing, and refining these definitions and criteria. The end result is a concise document that reflects the intent of the first two task forces. The final version of the student learning outcomes for UW's revised USP program preserved the three broad categories of outcomes, but combined some of the outcomes resulting in (a) three outcomes under "Breadth of Knowledge," (b) three outcomes under "Intellectual and Practical Skills," and (c) seven outcomes under "Personal and Social Responsibility" for a total of 13 UW student learning outcomes.
