The Office of Academic Affairs is sponsoring a series of USP 2015 Workshops offered in the spring, summer, and early fall of 2014. Descriptions of each workshop are provided to give you an idea of what you can learn about the new University Studies Program.
If you have a First Year Seminar (FYS) course approved for Fall 2015 or Spring 2016, this meeting is for you! We are asking that all FYS faculty attend one of these two informational meetings:
In addition to answering your questions and addressing your concerns, we will examine the draft rubric that will be used to assess all FYS Student Learning Outcomes, discuss how you can use the rubric to prepare assignments that align with the outcomes, and find out how the UW Office of Assessment will be handling assessment of FYS courses in Academic Year 2015-2016.

This informal discussion provides participants a chance to talk with other disciplinary faculty about how they see oral comm fitting into their courses. The majority of time will be given over to small-group and large-group idea-sharing, and participants will also receive information about resources available to them for the COM courses (e.g., draft COM2/COM3 rubrics, a collection of videos about foundational oral comm skills, and practice/feedback opportunities available through the Oral Comm Center)
Presenter: Rick Fisher
* Thursday, April 16th, 10:00 am-12:00 pm in COE 218 (tentative location)
If you plan to attend this session, please email Rick Fisher (firstname.lastname@example.org) to RSVP
Are you interested in getting a new or existing course approved for USP 2015? Then this workshop is for you! The presenters will walk you through the course approval process and leave you with the tools needed to have a Course Approval Form ready for submission.
Presenters: Erika Prager, Penne Ainsworth, & Karen Williams
Are you going to teach a USP 2015 course? Do you know how to align your syllabus, course activities, and course assignments with the required USP 2015 Student Learning Outcomes? Do you need assistance completing the USP 2015 Learning Outcomes Form? If so, then this workshop is for you!
Presenters: Patricia Colberg & Karen Williams
If you will be developing a COM course for delivery in Spring 2015 or later, this informal session will help you understand the student learning outcomes and generate strategies for instruction and assignments that align those ideas with the outcomes. Instructors of approved COM courses are also welcome to attend, if they'd like to learn more about the outcomes and strategies for assessment.
Presenters: Rick Fisher
Have questions about student learning outcomes, assessing them, and how to convert courses for HC, PN, Q, or V designations? Bring your syllabi and questions and get one-on-one help.
Presenters: Karen Williams
This workshop is designed to meet the needs of faculty who are planning to submit a First-Year Seminar proposal, but who were not able to attend the Summer Institute. We will cover the philosophy behind the first-year seminar at UW, research on best practices in first-year seminars, as well as provide assistance with course design and the course approval process.
Presenter: Kari Morgan & Meg Flanigan Skinner
At this workshop, we will cover the philosophy behind the first-year seminar here at UW, information on the unique characteristics of UW First-Year students, and research on best practices in teaching first-year seminars.
NOTE: this seminar is (essentially) a repeat of the “Designing Your FYS” fall workshop. So, if you attended in the fall, you may not want to attend again.
Workshops will be held on the following dates and times**:
Thursday March 5, 1-3pm - College of Agriculture & Natural Resources, Room 3028
Monday March 9, 9-11am College of Agriculture & Natural Resources, Room 237
If you would like to attend, please email Kari Morgan (email@example.com) and indicate which date you will be attending
** If these dates/times don’t work for you, please Kari at the email above. She is happy to host additional workshops on other dates and times this spring.
Please Feel free to join us at any time during the following work sessions. We will be available to answer questions, provide support, listen to ideas, and whatever else you might need as you design your First Year Seminar. If these dates and times do not work for you, please email Kari Morgan to arrange for another time.
