UW Basketball Greats Featured on Wyoming PBS Thursday

March 12, 2008 — To the outside world, Wyoming is not a basketball state, but the faithful who pack gyms at the University of Wyoming know better. They know the legendary skills of Kenny Sailors, inventor of the jump shot, and leader of UW's 1943 NCAA championship team.

In a special production of "Main Street, Wyoming" titled "Hooping it Up," Wyoming PBS television takes a look at in-state basketball greats through the years and visits with the fans that have watched their climb to notoriety.

"Hooping it Up" debuts Thursday, March 13, at 7 p.m., and will be rebroadcast Thursday, April 10, at 7 p.m.

Besides Sailors, other Cowboy State greats such as Marcus Bailey, Shannon Brown, Jaycee Carroll, James Johnson, Gerald Mattinson, Megan McGuffey and Kristen Newlin are featured in this locally-produced program.

Legendary broadcaster Curt Gowdy, a Cheyenne native, said of Sailors: "A rattle snake. That's what he was. The quickest guy I ever saw on the court, with his hands, his feet."

Wyoming PBS television can be found on various channels across Wyoming. For more information, check local listings, or visit the Web site for a complete schedule of channel numbers.
