Little League Baseball Comedy Closes UW Summer Theatre Season
The big world of Little League baseball comes on stage this summer in Richard Dressers' off-Broadway hit, "Rounding Third," a hilarious take on America's favorite pastime and the fathers who fuel the game.
The final theatre production in the University of Wyoming's 2008 Snowy Range Summer Theatre and Dance Festival, "Rounding Third" runs July 8-12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center studio theatre. Tickets cost $10 for the public, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for students. For tickets call (307) 766-6666 or go online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.
Directed by UW Professor Leigh Selting, the play follows Don and Michael, two mismatched coaches and fathers who are stuck together leading a team for the duration of the Little League season.
"This is a perfect summer show. Extremely funny and topical, it speaks to anyone who has ever had a child involved in competition, or played themselves," says Selting.
Blue-collar head coach Don is a brash former jock and seasoned veteran who lives to win, while his new assistant Michael is a sports-challenged corporate type who just wants to bond with his geeky son and ensure everyone has a good time.
From their first awkward meeting to the team's final game, this odd couple of the diamond cannot agree on anything, from assigning positions to running practices to competing in games. As Don and Michael struggle to influence the team with their opposing philosophies of the game, they unwittingly reveal their thoughts on parenthood, how to be a man and whether winning really is everything.
"The perennial battle of ‘winning vs. fun,' set around a Little League season, opens up a number of hilarious contradictions within ourselves and the game itself," says Selting. "What a great piece to work on."
This production of "Rounding Third" features Brandon Taylor and Michael Legg, both members of the Actors' Equity Association, the labor union representing American actors and stage managers in the professional theatre.
Taylor is a 2005 UW alumnus whose recent credits include: "Tango" (UCSD/La Jolla Playhouse) and "The Deception" (La Jolla Playhouse).
