UW to Host Seventh Annual Rocky Mountain Rendezvous

August 29, 2008

Students will have the opportunity to meet with prospective petroleum industry-related employers Sept. 19-22 at the seventh annual Rocky Mountain Rendezvous (RMR) at the University of Wyoming.

The RMR, hosted by the UW Department of Geology and Geophysics, is one of four annual job fairs sponsored by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the world's largest professional geological society with more than 31,000 members in 100-plus countries.

About 20 companies -- including Chevron, Encana Oil and Gas and ExxonMobil -- plan to send representatives to the RMR. The four-day event features a variety of activities ranging from field trips and short courses to resume and interviewing workshops and technical poster presentations.

"High-tech companies, such as petroleum companies, strongly support this job fair concept because young geoscientists require additional on-the-job training," says Randi Martinsen, RMR coordinator and a UW Department of Geology and Geophysics lecturer. "That means companies invest significant resources into training new hires and therefore want to make sure they have the right person for the job."

The RMR is also crucial for students, Martinsen adds.

"It is no longer about finding a job, it's about finding their ideal job," she says.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the top poster entries, including $800 for first prize.

The AAPG also holds annual job fairs in Houston and Norman, Okla., and at a rotating eastern U.S. location.
