Spring enrollment at the University of Wyoming is up by more than 670 students from
last year at this time.
Enrollment continues to grow at the University of Wyoming with 12,496 students registered for the spring semester, an increase of 674 students from the same time a year ago, according to a report presented today (Thursday) to the UW Board of Trustees.
After all the Outreach School enrollment numbers are recorded, student enrollment should surpass 13,000 students at the end of spring semester, says Sara Axelson, UW vice president for student affairs.
"The Hathaway Scholarship Program is contributing to the continued enrollment growth along with UW's outstanding academic and involvement opportunities," Axelson says. "There is no question that continued financial support from the Wyoming Legislature has made the UW campus an attractive draw for students in a variety of ways, including scholarships, outstanding faculty and tremendous facilities."
The highlights for student enrollment this semester, according to the report include:
-- Undergraduate enrollment increased 4.9 percent to 9,485 students (up 443).
-- Graduate and professional enrollment increased by 231 students to 3,011, representing
an increase of 8.3 percent.
-- A total of 447 more students are enrolled on the Laramie campus, raising the overall
number to 9,684.
-- Students taking courses through the Outreach School increased by 227 students to
2,812.
-- This spring the number of international students increased by 17 percent to 652
students. Since the 2008 spring semester, the number of international students has
risen by 197, which represents a 43 percent increase.
-- Minority undergraduate students increased by 52 students to 838 compared to 786
the year before.
-- Overall minority student population totaled 1,003 students for an increase of 60
students (6.4 percent).
-- Second B.S. degree students increased by 89 to 366 students from a year ago.
-- New enrolled transfer students increased by 66 to 368 students.
-- Former UW undergraduates enrolled this semester increased by 79 students to 233.
Axelson added that the job market may have influenced some of UW's enrollment increases with second bachelor degree, transfer and returning student enrollment growth.
