May 5, 2010

Eight University of Wyoming students are the recipients of Northern Arapaho Endowment Scholarships for the coming summer session and academic year.

They will be recognized at the American Indian Studies Honoring of Graduates ceremony Friday at 7 p.m. in the Wyoming Union Family Room. The Northern Arapaho Endowment at UW was established to help students from the Northern Arapaho tribe gain formal knowledge, skills and abilities.

New recipients of the award are Melvin Arthur, social work, and Ernest Lawson, American Studies, both juniors from Laramie; and Juanita Mount, social work, and Donelle Warren, psychology, both Riverton juniors.

Current recipients of the Endowment Scholarship who will continue to receive support for the coming year are Crystal Bearing, history and environment and natural resources senior, Laramie; Marrisa Goggles, criminal justice junior, Fort Washakie; Bryan Ouray, master's degree candidate in business administration, Herndon, Va.; and Yufna Soldier Wolf, anthropology senior, St. Stephens.

The Northern Arapaho Endowment scholarship program was created in 1987 when the Northern Arapaho Tribe gave $500,000 to UW. The gift was matched by the state, creating a $1 million endowment, which annually produces income for the scholarships. The endowment today has a market value of $1.86 million and has provided support of more than $1.5 million to 84 individuals, 51 of whom have earned degrees and several more who are currently enrolled.

"The spirit of the award assumes that the recipients have, as part of their ultimate goals, some direct participation, appropriate to their educational background, in activities that will further the common good of the Arapaho people," says John Nutter, from the UW Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.
