Consequences of bark beetle outbreaks in the Greater Yellowstone Area is the topic for the summer seminar series Thursday, July 1, at the University of Wyoming-National Park Service (UW-NPS) Research Center. The center is located at the AMK Ranch in Grand Teton National Park.
Jake Griffin from the University of Wisconsin-Madison will discuss how bark beetles cause rapid tree death at 6:30 p.m. at the AMK Ranch, north of Leeks Marina. Western North America is experiencing the most extensive and severe bark beetle outbreak in history, an outbreak that affects a wide array of forest ecosystem dynamics. Griffin will discuss his findings regarding the pros and cons of post-beetle outbreak management in terms of risk of crown fire and soil nitrogen factors.
