A retirement reception for Jon Schwartz, Wyoming Public Radio general manager since 1992, is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 3-5 p.m. at the UW Alumni House. Everyone is invited.

Under his watch, WPR grew from its base at KUWR and a couple of low-power translators to three public radio networks reaching 80 percent of the state's population through 15 full stations and seven translators.

"The University of Wyoming has been a wonderful home for public radio and for me personally and I remain indebted to many people here, past and present, for their steadfast support," Schwartz says, citing support of Outreach School Dean Maggi Murdock, UW presidents, and former administrators Ken Griffin and Judy Powell. He also recognizes the important contributions of the Wyoming State Legislature.

"I can't begin to list every person at UW who has been integral to the ongoing operations," he says. "The people who make UW run, in each of the departments on campus, have always been willing to go out of their way to help with our often unusual, unique needs."

He describes his staff as some of the finest people not only in broadcasting but in any workplace.

"Bob Beck and his News Department are respected across the country for the quality of their reporting on all walks of life in Wyoming," Schwartz says. He notes that every department within Wyoming Public Media is similarly accomplished, including the development staff, engineers programmers, on-air people and the business staff.

"I was blessed with many good friends and colleagues during my 35 years in radio both at NPR and at public radio stations around the nation," he says. "I will miss them, as I will the many good friends and people of Wyoming who have been so generous and kind over the years."
