Campus Construction Update for Week of Feb. 6

These are among the construction activities scheduled Feb. 6-12 at the University of Wyoming:

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities scheduled for the week:

State Fiscal Stabilization Fund Modernization, Renovation and Repairs -- (Scheduled completion, fall 2011.) The project focuses on major maintenance items, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) improvements and classroom improvements. Asbestos abatement was completed in the classrooms of the Geology and Engineering buildings. Demolition activities will begin in the Engineering Building this week.

Energy Resources Center (1020 Lewis Street, scheduled to be completed in summer, 2012) -- Site cleanup by the Berry Center is nearly complete. Fencing has been reconfigured to secure the site, and Lewis Street will remain closed during construction.

UW Tennis Facility (Armory Road across from Little League Complex, scheduled completion: March, 2011) -- Roof seaming work is scheduled as weather allows; post-tensioned slabs will be installed, and the building will be heated.

Downey Hall Renovation -- Carpet installation will conclude on the eighth floor and begin on the seventh. Painting will continue on the third through sixth floors. Finishing and texturing will continue on the second floor. Utility rough-ins and metal framing will continue on the first floor.

Visual Arts Center (22nd Street and Willett Drive near the Centennial Complex, scheduled completion is late fall, 2011) -- Footing work is near completion and foundation work will continue. Excavation and underground utility work will proceed as weather permits. There will be frequent heavy construction traffic for delivery of materials throughout the week.
Additional materials and equipment will start arriving on site for steel erection and continuing masonry work. The crane has been relocated to the east side for the next phase of steel erection that will continue for several weeks. Masonry work for the wall continues continuing on the southeast. A temporary enclosure of west structure will start to provide protection for the start of floor slabs and interior rough-in. The contractor will be moving frozen dirt to the stockpile north and hauling dry materials for fill. Be aware that there will be construction traffic throughout the construction period. Foot and vehicular traffic will not be permitted across the site. There may be extended workdays and, weather permitting; there may be work on weekend days to make up for time lost due to the extremely cold temperatures.

Summit View Apartment Deconstruction Phase II -- A six-block area is fenced off, so pedestrian and vehicle traffic will need to go around this area. Work will resume in the spring.

Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL3) additions to the State Veterinary Laboratory -- Operational testing was stopped due to problems with the incinerator and waste sterilizer. Repairs to these pieces of equipment will be done this week and the operational testing will start over. The contractor will continue to work on adding vents to the incinerator area and modifying the fire suppression system.

The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities for the week: 

Aven Nelson Building -- Window replacement continues. The west parking lot has been closed and fenced for construction staging throughout the project. The west entrance is closed, but will be available for emergency exit if needed; please use other entrances to the building. Scaffolding has been moved to the east side of the building. The east entrance will remain open. Please use caution around work areas.

Asbestos Abatement -- Work will begin Feb. 7 in Physical Science, Biological Science, Pharmacy and Hoyt Hall buildings. Impact to building occupants and pedestrian traffic should be minimal.

Union Parking Lot -- Two light poles will be installed on the east end of the parking lot. No-parking signs have been placed and a construction area will be defined. Use caution around the work site.

Coe Library -- Several security cameras will be installed on the first and third floors, and in the basement, beginning Feb. 4. Please use caution around the work areas.

College of Agriculture Building -- Painting in the third floor hallway is complete. Painting will begin in the second floor hallway this week. Please use caution around work areas.

S. H. Knight/Geology -- Carpenters and painters will be working in the west hallway to the west entrance into the Geological Museum. Please use caution in this work area.

Arts & Sciences -- First floor, south hallway will be painted. Please use caution in this work area.

State Vet Lab -- A portable building has been placed to the north of the Insectaries Building until mid February. Parking has been blocked off to accommodate the storage.

Campus -- The house foundations at 9th and Grand, 11th between Grand and Ivinson, and the north side of Lewis between 11th and 12th will be filled and graded as weather permits. Parking will be effected and heavy equipment will be in use in these locations.

Snow Removal -- Snow and ice removal will occur as needed throughout the winter. Please use caution around snow removal equipment and be safe walking, riding and driving on the snow.
