UW Dining Services Offers Online Menus and Nutrition Information
November 7, 2011 — Diners can now go online to view menus and nutrition information for University of Wyoming dining locations. The new YourNutrition interactive web tool, available at nutrition.uwyo.edu, allows users to make decisions about where to eat, plan a balanced diet and screen menus for allergens.
"According to the Centers for Disease Control, Wyoming's population hit 25 percent obesity last year, and weight gain is sneaky, adding a few pounds each year and increasing the risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other health problem," says Residence Life and Dining Services Dietitian Amy Bey. "YourNutrition provides nutrition information to diners so they can make informed decisions about the foods we are serving and build healthy eating habits before it becomes a bigger problem."
Diners can access ingredient information, calorie counts and nutrient information similar to those found on packaged food items. YourNutrition also allows diners to create a meal and adds up the calorie counts and nutrient information for them.
"Having good information about your food is the first step to making good choices," Bey says. "YourNutrition even works on mobile devices, so diners on campus can have that information at their fingertips when they arrive, or make choices about where they want to go for lunch from their office, residence hall room or anywhere with a computer."
Bey says YourNutrition is also an important tool for those with allergies and special dietary needs or preferences. The system will screen out foods for any of the 10 most common allergens, or will screen for those with vegetarian or vegan diets.
YourNutrition provides information for Washakie Dining Center, Ross Hall Cafe, Book & Bean, Elements, The Gardens, S'Pokes, Rolling Mill Cafe and CJ's. Dining Services is working to get information from Pita Pit and Panda Express into the system and the number of menu items in the system continues to grow.
