Campus Construction Update for July 8

These are among the construction activities scheduled July 8-14 at the University of Wyoming.

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities for the week:

UW Office Annex (21st Street and Garfield, scheduled completion Sept. 30) -- The project involves partial renovation of the lower level of the west wing for improvements to offices and other adjacent multi-use spaces. Demolition is completed and interior wall framing is under way. Asbestos abatement is completed in the conference rooms and adjacent corridors.

University of Wyoming/Casper College Student Union (UW/CC Student Union, scheduled completion November 2013) -- Construction has started with site preparation and foundation systems. Structural steel frame is under way, and interior concrete stair towers are completed.

Landscape Projects -- Construction work has begun on Sullivan Plaza, Public Edge Practice Field, Public Edge Southwest Campus Entry Marker and Bureau of Mines Landscape, and will continue during the summer months.

  • Sullivan Plaza -- Access to the south entrances of the Education Building and surrounding pedestrian pathways will be restricted by construction through Aug. 24. Plaza pedestrian paving, stone and boulder setting, and reconstruction of the front entry stairs is ongoing.
  • Public Edge Practice Field (Tailgate Park) -- 20th Street adjacent to the field, as well as adjacent portions of 20th Street and Grand Avenue pedestrian sidewalks, will be temporarily closed by construction through July 30. Construction may limit westbound Grand Avenue to a single lane at times. Boulder setting, fencing and general landscaping is ongoing.
  • Public Edge Southwest Campus Entry Marker -- Adjacent portions of Ninth Street and Grand Avenue pedestrian sidewalks may be temporarily closed by construction through Sept. 28. 
  • Bureau of Mines Landscape -- The vehicular access and pedestrian corridor between the Berry Biodiversity Conservation Center and the Health Sciences Center may be restricted by construction through Aug. 24.

Counselor Education Training Clinic (Education Building, scheduled completion Oct. 22) – Renovation construction work in the northeast portion of the basement of the Education Building is under way. General renovation construction activities will commence in earnest this week. Construction staging will likely restrict access via the northeast building entry and to a portion of the parking area, northeast of the Education Building, through completion of the renovation project.

Museum Closed -- The UW Geological Museum is closed for renovation and is scheduled to reopen at the beginning of the fall semester.

Ivinson Parking Lot Expansion -- Final backfill/subgrading and parking lot expansion work continues. This affects 31 parking spaces during construction. The project will add 67 additional parking spaces.  

Student Apartments Bison Run Village (Scheduled completion August 2012) -- The new apartments are in a three-block area south of Willett Drive, between Crane and Landmark Village. The community center and apartment model unit are now open Mondays through Fridays. Residence Life and Dining Services maintenance staff members have moved into the community center's maintenance area. Eleven of the apartment buildings are now complete, with punch-list work ongoing. Work on the remaining apartments continues with electrical/plumbing finish and painting. Exterior stone, siding, roofing and concrete site work continues. Landscaping continues on all parts of the site. There will be a total of 15 apartment buildings (332 beds) with the community center and maintenance building.

White Hall Renovations -- Renovation and abatement work have begun. Abatement is proceeding from top floors to bottom floors. Electrical demolition has started. The west parking lot will be closed until summer 2013. Underground electrical excavation continues in front of Washakie. This will affect half the sidewalk and partial access into Washakie. Pedestrian traffic will need to use caution.  

Energy Innovation Center (formerly ERC, at 1020 Lewis St., scheduled completion September 2012) -- Access to main campus will be between or through Earth Sciences and the Berry Center. Lewis Street will remain closed during construction. Parking will be limited in areas around construction, including the drive along the west side of Engineering. The access from main campus, along the west side of Engineering to Lewis Street, will be closed during this phase of construction. The west end of the ramp, behind Engineering, will be closed. Handicapped parking has been relocated to the northwest corner of Lewis and 10th streets, with access through the Berry Center or Earth Sciences Building to main campus.

Framing of interior walls is complete, along with drywall in most areas. Painting is well under way, along with other interior finishes. Interior door and window frames are under way in office and lab areas. Rough-in of mechanical and electrical systems is ongoing. Exterior wall system framing is complete. The remaining temporary weather enclosure on the north will be removed as the glazing system is completed. Installation of the exterior enclosure, primarily masonry and glazing work, is concentrated on the north and west walls during the week. Storm drains along the south and east will continue in preparation of site work. Minor utility work will be ongoing. The exterior enclosure includes insulation, water shed, stone and brick masonry, and glazing systems. Expect congestion from delivery trucks, and take extreme care when walking around trucks waiting in the street.

West War Memorial Stadium (scheduled completion July 31) -- Installation of stair risers will proceed throughout the week, along with preparation of surfaces for new slip-resistant coating. Preparation on the lower east War Memorial Stadium lower walk surface will start in the next week or so.

The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities for the week. Please direct questions to the service desk, 766-6225.

Campus -- Parking lot striping will continue this week. Monday: Wyoming Union Parking lot. Tuesday: Corbett East parking lot. Wednesday: Ag Annex/Old Dairy. Thursday: North of the Rochelle Athletic Center. Parking lots will be closed while painting operations are under way. Please use caution around, and in, these areas. 

Campus -- New sod is scheduled to be placed at various locations around campus. Sprinklers will apply additional water to ensure successful transplant of new turf.   

Beta House -- Asbestos abatement will continue. No unnecessary traffic is recommended in the basement. Building occupants have been notified.

Central Energy Plant -- The fenced construction area will remain through August 20, the end of steam shutdown. The sidewalk adjacent to 19th Street remains closed to pedestrian traffic. Please use the sidewalk on the east side of 19th Street.

Concrete Repairs -- No repairs scheduled for this week.

Jacoby Golf Course -- Construction continues on the east campus drainage project at Jacoby Golf Course. Inlet work will begin next week and traffic on Grays Gable will be routed accordingly. Installation of sod at Pond #1 will necessitate the frequent application of additional water. Signs are posted at the affected holes and in the clubhouse. The affected holes will be off limits during construction hours (7 a.m.-5 p.m.) for the remainder of the construction period. Please use caution in the work areas.

College of Law Building -- Lighting replacements are ongoing in the Law Library. This project will help UW in its continued effort to be more energy efficient. The work is funded, in part, by energy rebates from Rocky Mountain Power.

College of Law Building -- The student lounge area is currently undergoing a remodel. Please use caution around the work area.

East Shuttle Lot (30th Street and Willet Drive) -- Electrical work will be completed next week. There will be an electrical shutdown of the middle shelter as the electrical work is completed. Use caution around work areas.

Knight Hall -- The first portion of this lighting replacement project is complete. Work schedules will be coordinated by the electricians with occupants of the building. This project will help UW in its continued effort to be more energy efficient. The work is funded, in part, by energy rebates from Rocky Mountain Power. Please use caution around work areas.

Knight Hall -- Painting is ongoing in the areas of the University Counseling Center. Please use caution around work areas.

Spanish Walk -- Taping and painting in the laundry rooms continues this week. Please use caution in these areas.

Law Library -- The high-density mobile storage project is ongoing in the basement. Shelving assembly continues in the east basement. Modifications to re-use fixed shelving will occur outside in the staging area.

Honors Center (10th and Ivinson streets) -- Painting and trim work are ongoing inside. Construction of the addition continues outside. Sidewalks around the house are closed. Please use alternate routes.

Wyoming State Vet Lab -- Landscaping work will be ongoing in front of the Round Building and by the main entry sign to the site. The new entry sign is scheduled to be placed on the foundation. Please use caution in the work area near the driveway.

Biological Sciences Basement -- Floor tile and carpet installation will begin next week, with cabinet installation to follow. Please use caution around the construction area.

Fieldhouse North -- This project is complete.
