The University of Wyoming women’s team won for the second time in the Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) last weekend, taking the Sheridan College rodeo.

Winning one event and placing three of the four women’s team members at Sheridan gave the Cowgirls 290 team points to move within just 12.5 points of Northeastern Junior College (Sterling, Colo.) for the overall regional lead.

Only two rodeos remain on the fall schedule.

Lydia Coe, a Salinas, Calif., senior, won the breakaway title by turning in the top time in the short go to take the average. Coe, who was UW’s lone women’s team member to qualify for last year’s College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR), took over the top spot in the overall regional standings.

In second place is teammate Kaycee Nelson, a Buffalo, S.D., senior, who placed sixth in Sunday’s average, giving the Cowgirls 180 team points.

The final points came from Chandler Markel, who was fourth in the women’s barrel racing competition. The Scottsbluff, Neb., freshman won the opening round to score 110 points for the team. She moved up to fourth place in the regional standings and is just five points out of the number three slot.

For the weekend, UW was followed in the team standings by Central Wyoming College (CWC), which scored 255 points, while Gillette College was third with 225 and regional leader NJC had 215.

The UW men’s struggles continued for the second straight weekend. With points coming in just one of the men’s six events, the Cowboys managed just 150 total points to place eighth at Sheridan College.

Defending CRMR champion Casper College won the rodeo with 645 points, followed by EWC with 465 and NJC with 400.

UW also slipped in the overall regional standings, dropping to fourth place with 1,045 points. Gillette held its top position with 1,475 points, while Casper College moved into second place with 1,210 points. EWC is third with 1,135.

Justin Moldaschel of Stanton, Minn., was the lone member of the six-man UW team to score points at Sheridan. The junior won the bareback riding event by placing in both rounds of competition. He won the opening round and split third place to win the average.

The win moved him up the CRMR standings to third overall.

Two other UW men placed in their respective events, but they were not selected to the six-man team prior to the weekend rodeo. Colby Sturgeon from Torrington was fourth in the tie down roping and bull rider Hunter Hoover, from Manter, Kan., was fifth in the average.

Casper College’s Neil Williams won the men’s all-around, while the women’s winner was Shelby Winchell of Chadron State College.

Lamar (Colo.) Community College hosts this weekend’s rodeo, and the final fall event is the following weekend at Laramie County Community College.
