New Staff Training and Enrichment Program Launched at UW

January 14, 2013

A new Staff Training and Enrichment Program (STEP) will enhance the performance and motivation of University of Wyoming staff members.

Applications are now being accepted. Developed by the Staff Senate and Human Resources Department, STEP will offer a consistent training and leadership development program.

“Having a well-trained core of supervisors can lead to a more consistent and efficient approach to leadership,” says Ben Marks, Staff Senate president. “This program is a valuable tool for supervisors to promote and encourage staff to take advantage of development and enrichment opportunities, and to be seen as a significant accomplishment that serves as a testament to the skills an employee can bring to the university.”

He says current and aspiring supervisors, who have been recommended by their supervisors, are encouraged to apply.

STEP takes advantage of resources for training supervisors, managers and administrators. STEP uses the StarQuest Leadership and Management program to focus on four learning tracks: change management, development coaching, team development and communication skills. These tracks incorporate workbooks for each learning track, online courseware, reinforcement guides, StarQuest-facilitated webcasts and consulting and coaching services by StarQuest.

Additionally, STEP will incorporate a support network that includes a half-day learning session each month that offers practice opportunities for each learning track. The blended learning program combines online training, self-directed learning and face-to-face classroom experiences. The students will work through the online modules and workbooks at their own pace.

An orientation session is set for Thursday, Feb. 1, with training offered from 9 a.m.-noon Feb. 28, March 28, April 22 and May 16. A final session and reception will be held May 21 or May 23.
