The University of Wyoming Department of Sociology has presented its 2012-13 Flittie Award to Amy Sarandopoulos of Sydney, Australia.

The award honors the department’s top graduating senior. Scheduled to graduate in May, Sarandopoulos was unanimously chosen by the department’s faculty members. She will receive a cash award, and her name will be added to the Flittie Award plaque displayed in the department office.

"It has truly been an honor to have Amy as one of our majors," says Department of Sociology Head Donna Barnes. "Every faculty member in the department who had Amy in a course raved about her as a student in terms of her test performance -- usually the highest grade in the class, excellent writing abilities and strong academic work ethic. Faculty were impressed that she was able to turn in such a stellar academic performance while handling the challenges of being a student-athlete."

The annual recipient must have completed 90 credit hours of university coursework, completed all of the required foundational coursework for the major, and have a minimum 3.5 grade point average within the program.

Sarandopoulos was a member of the UW soccer team.

"We are very proud of Amy," says UW soccer coach Pete Cuadrado. "It's great to see her recognized by other members of the University of Wyoming. She personified what a student-athlete should be and continues to be a good ambassador for the university and the soccer program."

Sarandopoulos will be honored at the department's annual graduation and honors banquet in April, and profiled in the annual newsletter in the fall.
