UW Student Named 2013 New Face of Civil Engineering

February 15, 2013 — University of Wyoming senior Stacia Slowey of Thornton, Colo., has been selected as one of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ 2013 New Faces of Civil Engineering – College Edition.

A civil engineering student, Slowey was chosen from among a field of talented college students nationwide whose academic and extracurricular achievements demonstrate their promise as future leaders in the engineering profession.

The students were selected based on their superior stature among their peers as well-rounded students, engaged citizens and strong representatives of ASCE’s vision for successful stewards of the civil engineering profession’s future.

The ASCE honor recognizes Slowey’s many academic and extracurricular accomplishments, including serving as former president of the student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers; as a contributor to a book drive for the senior honor society, Mortar Board; as a competitor to the preliminary design competition for the 2011 regional student ASCE conference; as the treasurer of the student chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers; as a member of the student chapter of the Water Environmental Federation/American Water Work Association; and as the webmaster for the engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi.

Additionally, she has been a design technician on the Laramie Design Squad, a cooperative education unit operated by the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) and the UW Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering. Design squad members are full-time engineering students who work a minimum of 20 hours per week for WYDOT, producing contract plans for highway construction projects.

“In the almost 30 years that I have been teaching engineering students on the job and in the 25 years that I have been teaching them in the classroom, I have run across just a few students who are capable of getting the kinds of grades in the difficult engineering curriculum that Stacia has, while simultaneously participating in numerous extracurricular activities,” says Design Squad supervisor Jim Kladianos. “She brings a level of enthusiasm and a ‘go-getter’ attitude to the workplace that is unlike anything I have ever experienced before.”

As an ASCE New Face, Slowey is eligible for selection as ASCE’s representative for the national New Faces of Engineering – College Edition recognition program, sponsored by the National Engineers Week Foundation.

If chosen, she will be recognized along with top students from other engineering disciplines in a national media campaign, and receive a $500 cash scholarship from ASCE.
