Campus Construction Update for May 19-25

May 17, 2013 — These are among the construction activities scheduled May 19-25 at the University of Wyoming:

Electrical Outages -- Areas of campus will be without power intermittently for electrical switch cleaning. Expect power outages in the following areas: Saturday, May 18 -- Petroleum Engineering from 7-9 a.m.; and the Engineering Building from 2:30-4:30 p.m.; Tuesday, May 21 -- Wyoming Hall and McWhinnie Hall, after 5 p.m.; and Thursday, May 23 -- College of Agriculture Building, after 5 p.m. Building contacts have been notified.

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities for the week:

Half Acre Gymnasium Addition and Renovation (Scheduled completion spring 2015) -- Full project information is available at www.uwyo.edu/ha-renovation. Half Acre Gymnasium remains open and accessible via the west entrance. Pre-construction activity at the project site will continue this week. Phase I, consisting of the demolition and reconstruction of the east portion of the existing building, continues with the establishment of construction and staging areas north, south and east of the building. Temporary staging also may be defined near the west entrance as required by the ongoing construction-related tasks. The day lot parking area and roadway immediately east of Half Acre Gymnasium are closed. Temporary day-use parking will be established in the lot east of the Wyoming Union. Please exercise caution in the vicinity of Half Acre Gymnasium as pre-construction activities continue.

Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts (Fine Arts Building, renovation and expansion, scheduled completion December 2014) -- Additional project information is available here. The parking lot on the east side of the UW Performing Arts Center is closed. It is being used for construction staging and will be converted into a green area following construction. Building visitors should use the lot on the north side of the building. Those entering the Performing Arts Center must now enter through the doors on the west side of the building. This will be the entrance for all building operations, including classes, ticket purchases and performances until construction is complete. The east side of the Fine Arts Building is a secured construction zone with restricted access. The deconstruction is under way. Excavation earthwork and underground utility work will begin this week. Heavy truck traffic will be frequent near the College of Law and on Willett Drive.

Biological Sciences Building Mechanical Modifications (Scheduled completion mid-August) -- The building’s mechanical system will be extensively modified over the next several months. The contractor has started the major portion of the work. Staging is established on the south side of the building (with no pedestrian access) and in part of the Ivinson Parking Area. Traffic will be rerouted along the east side of Biological Sciences (see map). Building users are encouraged to use the northwest entrance to avoid construction activities. Asbestos abatement in the basement and sub-basement has begun. Demolition of ceilings on the first floor, parts of the second floor, and on third floor will take place with removal of duct work following the demolition of the ceilings. Labs on the compressed schedule will not be involved with the ceiling work.

ESCo Project (Energy Services Company) -- Long Energy Services Co. employees and contractors will work on lighting retrofits in the Engineering and Agriculture buildings, which will impact building occupants. Workers will wear identifying badges.

White Hall Renovations -- New installations continue on the second through fourth floors. Rough-in installations continue in the basement and first floor. Window replacement is complete on the second through 12th floors, and first-floor work is ongoing. Punch-lists are complete on the fifth through 12th floors. Re-roofing activities have begun with more truck traffic on the south side of the building. The new east entry metal framing is complete and work is starting on the exterior wall and roof finish. Fencing is placed around the area. The west parking lot will be closed until late summer.

Education Annex Canopy (Scheduled completion August 2013) -- Construction activities have begun on the project, including the erection of fencing and temporary barricades defining the construction and staging areas. Vehicular access and parking availability in the lot north of the Education Building will be limited throughout construction and will be subject to frequent revision as construction activities dictate. During construction, pedestrian access to the north entrance of the Education Building and the east entrance of the Education Annex will be maintained. However, ongoing construction activities will require access to be limited to designated pathways. Pedestrians and motorists should exercise caution in the area.

Education Annex – Literacy Research Center and Clinic (lower floor, Education Annex; scheduled completion January 2014) -- The lower (first) floor of the Education Annex is closed for construction. Pre-construction asbestos abatement has been completed in advance of renovation construction. Limited and sporadic pre-construction activity at the project site will continue to occur before the start of renovation construction in late May.

University of Wyoming/Casper College Student Union (UW/CC Student Union, scheduled completion November 2013) -- The primary building enclosure is complete, allowing interior construction activities to proceed on or ahead of schedule. Rough-in construction is generally complete throughout UW/CC third- and fourth-floor spaces, and preliminary finish construction has started. Overall project construction is approximately 80 percent complete.

Energy Innovation Center (formerly ERC, at 1020 Lewis St.) -- Lewis Street remains closed during construction. The School of Energy Resources and Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute are now located in the EIC. First, second and third floor labs are being occupied. Access to main campus now includes the passage between Engineering and the new EIC, along with access between Earth Sciences and the Berry Center. Access to the EIC north entrance will be from the east along Lewis. Parking will be limited in areas around construction. Audio visual systems and 3-D visualization systems are installed with operational testing underway. Congestion and traffic on Lewis continues due to street closure and ongoing construction. Watch for UW and contractors’ trucks and equipment.

Enzi STEM Facility (Lewis Street between 10th and 11th streets, scheduled completion June 2015) -- The phone company should complete rerouting work this week. Minor cleanup work may be done. Workers are waiting for the asphalt plant to open before re-paving the streets.

Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center (22nd and Grand, scheduled completion fall 2014) -- Additional project information is available here. Site excavation and site utility work, and concrete foundation work is under way. All of this type of site work will continue through May.

The UW Physical Plant reports the following activities for the week. Please direct questions to the service desk, 766-6225.

Early Child Care Center -- The southwest sidewalk will be closed for installation of a new concrete ramp. Please use caution in the area.

Landmark Apartments -- Roof replacement and attic upgrades will begin on the 12-unit complex. Crews will begin with units 445-452 and move to 453-460. Please use caution around equipment, barricaded work zones and fenced staging areas. Project completion date is Friday, Aug. 16.

Sorority Row -- Workers are replacing a section of water main serving the Delta Delta Delta sorority house. Use caution near excavation activity and equipment north of the house in the parkway and street.

Campus -- Crews continue to activate irrigation sprinkler systems for the summer season. Overspray onto sidewalks and driveways could create slippery areas. Turf  brooming will be ongoing.

Landmark and Spanish Walk Apartments -- Weather permitting, utility potholing, trenching and conduit installation will continue this week. Heavy equipment will be in the area, and sidewalk closures are possible. Use caution around heavy equipment and crews. This project will continue through May.

West Campus Electrical Relocation -- Potholing for utilities, excavation and horizontal drilling in the area of Ninth-11th/Lewis-Flint streets will continue. Heavy equipment will be in the area, and partial sidewalk and street closures are possible.

Old Main -- Reconstruction of the men’s fourth-floor restroom will continue this week, and it will remain closed until complete. Please use caution around crews and equipment in the area.

Ross Hall Cafe -- Ross Hall Cafe renovations continue. The facility will be closed through the summer and is scheduled to reopen for the fall semester. The contractor staging and parking area will be on the north side of the building. Use caution in the area.

Cooper House -- Painting will continue throughout the building this week. Use caution around crews and materials.

Earth Sciences Building -- Painting will be ongoing in the hallways. Please use caution around painting crews and equipment.

Geology Building -- Renovations to Classroom 216 are ongoing. Use caution around crews and equipment in this area.

College of Agriculture Building -- Maintenance of the building vacuum pumps and fume hoods is complete.

Animal Science/Molecular Biology Building -- The RO/DI water system maintenance is complete.
