An Update from President Sternberg

August 30, 2013 — Welcome to the start of a new academic year at the University of Wyoming! Let me start by saying how happy my wife, Karin, and I are to be in Laramie and starting this fall semester with you! Laramie is a beautiful place in the summer, but nothing can compare to the vibrancy of having the faculty and students back on campus!

August 30, 2013 — A new University of Wyoming landmark honors Tommy Thompson, a master floriculturist who cultivated the university’s beautiful flower gardens for three decades.

August 29, 2013 — Maohong Fan wants to help solve an energy puzzle that will ensure Wyoming’s coal production remains viable for decades to come. Finding catalysts, or new materials that can be used for processing Wyoming coal, may be the key.

August 27, 2013 — Experts led by groundbreaking author and Time magazine writer Steven Brill will examine sweeping social, legal and economic consequences of the Affordable Care Act during a Consumer Issues Conference Oct. 2-4 at the University of Wyoming. The conference also examines the state of innovation and legal issues in the new health care market generally.

August 27, 2013 — Navajo poet Sherwin Bitsui will give several public readings this fall as a University of Wyoming Eminent Writer in Residence.

International Program Seeks Host Families

August 26, 2013 — Laramie families are invited to participate in the Friendship Families Program that connects international students with local families. The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 6.

August 26, 2013 — The University of Wyoming’s Geological Museum is now open to the public from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and is closed Sundays.

Yellow UW Pride flag New President Initiates ‘UW Pride Fridays’

August 26, 2013 — University of Wyoming President Bob Sternberg has started a new on-campus tradition by encouraging students, faculty and staff to wear brown and gold UW gear every Friday.

UW Adopts New Learning Management System

August 26, 2013 — Citing factors such as ease of use by students and faculty, flexibility, innovative instructional features and accessibility, the University of Wyoming has adopted Canvas by Instructure as UW’s single learning management system (LMS). The new LMS (www.uwyo.edu/WyoCourses) will replace less-user-friendly systems now in use and will be the sole campus learning platform beginning in fall 2014.

UW Labor Day Closures

August 26, 2013 — Most University of Wyoming offices will be closed and classes dismissed Monday, Sept. 2, for the Labor Day holiday. Regular hours (8 a.m.-5 p.m.) will resume Tuesday, Sept. 3.

August 26, 2013 — An exciting new dining experience, “Rendezvous,” will come to the University of Wyoming in early September. Located in the completely renovated space of the former Ross Hall Dining Room, Rendezvous will offer a variety of breakfast and lunch options, along with a full-service coffee bar.

Hess Digital Rock Physics Lab Brings World-Class Focus to Oil and Gas Recovery

August 22, 2013 — More and more, oil and gas companies are faced with extracting precious minerals from unconventional reservoirs that are difficult and costly to access. They have an ally in Mohammad Piri, a University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources associate professor of chemical and petroleum engineering, who heads the Hess Digital Rock Physics Laboratory in UW’s new Energy Innovation Center.

August 20, 2013 — A unique atmospheric research project housed at the University of Wyoming since 1971 will mark its 50th anniversary next week with a special balloon launch and other activities.

Household Item Giveaway for International Students Set

August 19, 2013 — The annual Household Item Giveaway for international students attending the University of Wyoming is set for Saturday, Aug. 24, just south of the Cheney International Center. Donations can be dropped off between 7-7:30 a.m., and the students will be allowed to take items beginning at 8 a.m.

August 19, 2013 — On Friday, August 30, 2013, we will be joining the State of Wyoming in College Color Day. Wyoming Governor Mead has signed a declaration asking Wyoming residents to wear their collegiate colors on the 30th to commemorate the tradition and spirit of their favorite college.

UW Enhanced Oil Recovery Research Lab Targets Stranded Reserves

August 8, 2013 — Tens of billions of barrels of oil remain stranded in aging fields in Wyoming’s Big Horn, Wind River and Powder River basins, according to David Mohrbacher, director of the University of Wyoming’s Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute (EORI). A portion of this stranded oil, between 1 billion and 3 billion barrels, can be recovered at today’s oil prices using enhanced oil recovery techniques.

West Campus Power Outages Scheduled

August 6, 2013 — The UW Physical Plant has scheduled an electrical outage, in coordination with Rocky Mountain Power, to re-work the west campus electrical service. The outage will begin at 4:45 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, and last approximately 1.5 hours. Buildings between 15th and Ninth streets and between Ivinson and Lewis streets will be without power during the outage.
