UW Announces Commencement Schedule and Speakers

Wyoming Secretary of State Max Maxfield and noted Wyoming trial lawyer and author Gerry Spence will be among speakers at this year’s UW commencement ceremonies.

Wyoming Secretary of State Max Maxfield and famed Wyoming trial lawyer and author Gerry Spence will be among speakers during University of Wyoming spring commencement ceremonies.

Ceremonies for the individual colleges are scheduled Saturday, May 10; College of Law ceremonies will be held Saturday, May 17; and UW-Casper ceremonies are scheduled Thursday, May 15. Additionally, several special ceremonies are scheduled beginning Friday, May 2.

UW is scheduled to accord degrees upon 1,629 students, including 1,186 undergraduates, 337 graduate students, 62 College of Law graduates and 44 School of Pharmacy graduates. The largest degree categories are bachelor of arts, 435; bachelor of science, 394; master of science, 130; bachelor of science in nursing, 103; and master of arts, 94.

The schedule of events for individual college commencement ceremonies, along with key speakers, are:

Saturday, May 10:

8:30 a.m. -- College of Health Sciences, Indoor Practice Facility: College Dean Joe Steiner; and nurse and health care economist Peter Buerhaus, the Valere Potter Distinguished Professor of Nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing.

9 a.m. -- College of Business, Arts and Sciences auditorium: graduating students Daniel De Cecco, Green River, B.S. in business economics, with a minor in international business; Hannah Peterson, Wellington, Colo., B.S. in accounting; and Mya Pronschinske, Waumandee, Wis., the first graduate in the new Ph.D. program in marketing.

9 a.m. -- College of Education, War Memorial Fieldhouse: former College of Education Dean Dick Andrews.

11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. -- President’s picnic, with free meals and beverages at two sites: east side of Prexy’s Pasture, with available seating in the Wyoming Union; and the north end of War Memorial Stadium.

1:30 p.m. -- College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, War Memorial Fieldhouse: graduating students Samantha Heitsch, Cheyenne, B.S. in agricultural communication; and Tyler Harran, Jamestown, N.C., B.S. in agroecology with a minor in insect biology.

1:30 p.m. -- College of Arts and Sciences, Indoor Practice Facility: outstanding graduates Sam Bartko, Cheyenne, chemistry and chemical engineering; and Melanie Vigil, Lander, gender and women’s studies and international studies.

1:30 p.m. -- College of Engineering and Applied Science, Arts and Sciences auditorium: Elizabeth Butler, Douglas, Joint Engineering Council’s outstanding senior; Elizabeth Hungerford, Gillette, Wyoming Engineering Council’s student engineer of the year; and Thomas Botts, Shell executive and 2013 UW distinguished alumnus.

6 p.m. -- Army/Air Force ROTC commissioning ceremony, Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall: UW President Dick McGinity.

Thursday, May 15

7:30 p.m. -- UW-Casper graduation ceremonies, Casper Events Center: Secretary of State of Wyoming Max Maxfield; Maria Kuznetsova, assistant lecturer of psychology, faculty speaker; and Ashley Schilling, B.S. in biology, student speaker.

Saturday, May 17

10 a.m. -- College of Law, Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall: Wyoming trial lawyer Gerry Spence.

Friday, May 9

12:15 p.m. -- UW Military and Veterans graduation ceremony, College of Education auditorium: UW Trustee David Palmerlee of Buffalo, U.S. Navy, 1964-69.

12:30 p.m. -- Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing convocation, Arts and Sciences auditorium: Marlene Ethier of Rock Springs, former nursing program director at Western Wyoming Community College and the nursing school’s 2014 distinguished alumna.

3 p.m. -- Multicultural Graduation Ceremony, Hilton Garden Inn grand ballroom: UW President Dick McGinity and student speaker Hannah Gunderman, Boothbay, Maine.

6 p.m. -- American Indian Studies Ceremony, Hilton Garden Inn garden ballroom: Bentley Spang, multidisciplinary artist, writer and curator.
