The Wyoming Pharmacy Association and Cardinal Health recently presented the Cardinal Health Generation Rx award to Antoinette Brown, assistant lecturer in the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy.
The award honors pharmacists who have demonstrated excellence in community-based prescription drug abuse prevention. It recognizes efforts by pharmacists to raise awareness of this serious public health problem, and encourages educational prevention efforts aimed at patients, youths and other members of the community.
Brown is the current chair of the Wyoming Rx Abuse Stakeholders, a collaboration of various groups that educate health care professionals, law enforcement, the government and the general public about the misuse and abuse of prescription medications.
Her leadership resulted in publication of a “Pain Management Toolkit” that is being disseminated to physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, dentists and podiatrists, in addition to being an online resource for the general public. She has been integral in arranging for ex-NBA player Chris Herren to speak at the Rx Abuse Stakeholders conference in September. Conferences, scheduled in both Cheyenne and Laramie, will help to educate students and their parents about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
Brown graduated from the UW School of Pharmacy in 1992. She worked as a retail pharmacist for more than 10 years and owned her own pharmacy. She has worked for the Wyoming Department of Health, where she managed the Wyoming Medicaid Pharmacy program.
Before coming to UW, she was a regional account manager for a pharmacy benefits management services company. She currently is the school’s coordinator of experiential education with a focus on helping fourth-year students.
