A new exhibition, “Identity and Gender Roles: The North American Indian Photographs of Edward S. Curtis,” will open Saturday, May 7, at the University of Wyoming Art Museum.
The exhibition, on view through Aug. 6, presents photographs by Edward S. Curtis, one of the most recognized and celebrated photographers of American Indian tribes. Selected from the Art Museum’s collection, the exhibition examines how identity and gender roles are illustrated through Curtis’s depictions of American Indian daily tribal life in the early 20th century.
About Edward S. Curtis
In the early 20th century, Curtis launched “The North American Indian” project, a 30-year mission that he described as an effort “to form a comprehensive and permanent record of all the important tribes of the United States and Alaska that still retain to a considerable degree their . customs and traditions.”
The exhibition is funded in part by Union Wireless, Tronox and UW Art Museum Gala funds.
