UW Collegiate Chorale Presents ‘Enjoy the Silence’ Oct. 27

October 19, 2016

The University of Wyoming Collegiate Chorale presents its fall concert “Enjoy the Silence” Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

Tickets cost $10 for the public; $7 for senior citizens, UW faculty and staff; and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.

The UW Collegiate Chorale is the university’s premier choral ensemble consisting of 30 UW students. The students have sung at national and regional conferences of the National Collegiate Choral Organization and the National Association for Music Educators.

“Enjoy the Silence” is conducted by Nicole Lamartine, UW Department of Music associate professor. The concert will explore facets of silence as it relates to music.

The concert is a journey that begins with Norwegian composer Kim Arnesen’s “Flight Song” that describes sounds in nature as music. The show then moves to two pieces by composer Eric Whitacre: “Little Man in a Hurry” and “Enjoy the Silence,” which contrast the hustle and bustle of everyday life with an arrangement of Depeche Mode’s ‘80s hit.

Pianist Lisa Rickard will be featured on composer Randall Stroope’s “Lamentations of Jeremiah,” followed by a poignant setting of a poem imagining what it must have been like to lose a loved one on 9/11.

Six-year-old Max Markley will join the Collegiate Chorale to narrate “One Boy Told Me,” a set of poems by composer Timothy Takach.

The program will close with a gospel setting of “I Sing Because I’m Happy,” a lively exploration of the sounds tossing silence back and forth through time and space.
