UW Graduate Student Nominated for State Literacy Award

University of Wyoming graduate student Katy Brock, of Laramie, was among nominees for the inaugural First Lady’s Leaders in Literacy Award.

The Teton Literacy Center (TLC) received the award last week, announced by Wyoming first lady Carol Mead and the UW Literacy Research Center and Clinic (LRCC).

The LRCC, located in the UW College of Education, established the award to recognize a Wyoming citizen, organization, community or business that has made significant contributions to advancing literacy within Wyoming.

Brock, who is in the College of Education’s curriculum and instruction program, was among 13 individuals or groups nominated for the first literacy award.

“We received nominations from all over the state acknowledging the innovative and impactful efforts of a myriad of groups and individuals working to promote literacy in our state,” Mead says. “Our selection committee was impressed and inspired by the caliber of work being done.”

The TLC will be honored at the Wyoming Business Forum luncheon Nov. 10 in Cheyenne and will receive a $4,000 award.

The TLC’s mission is to change lives “through the power of literacy in its community.” The TLC focuses on family literacy through prevention, intervention and environment programs.
