University of Wyoming student Joseph Rubino, from Laramie, has been named the February International Pike of the Month by the Pi Kappa Alpha International Fraternity.
Rubino, a junior pursuing a B.S. degree in economics and a B.A. in history, was selected from among 17,000 members, according to the fraternity’s international offices in Memphis, Tenn. Rubino was nominated for his leadership skills in the chapter, on the campus and in the community. As a 3.8 grade-point average student, he plans to attend law school and practice natural resource and constitutional law.
Award recipients demonstrate Pike ideals, working to improve themselves and have a positive impact on their chapters, campuses and communities.
Rubino has been a significant asset in the success of Iota Alpha Chapter receiving its charter at UW. As a freshman, he took on a leadership position to serve as secretary and is the current chapter president. His campus involvement includes serving as a student-at-large on the Associated Students of UW budget and planning committee.
In 2014, Rubino was selected by the Wyoming Department of Education for the U.S. Senate Youth Program, in which he was recognized for his knowledge of the U.S. and Wyoming state governments. He also received the UW Alumni Association Scholarship and Marriott Corporate Marketing Scholarship.
Political activism has been a part of Rubino’s college career. Beginning in 2014, he served as a team member for Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell’s campaign. Last summer, Rubino was the administrative and legislative intern for then-Wyoming U.S. Rep. Cynthia Lummis in Washington, D.C., where he participated in caucus meetings related to water, energy and public lands use. In addition to supporting the congresswoman, he was elected as the Republican precinct committeeman for Albany County District 46-2.
