UW Board of Trustees to Meet May 10

The University of Wyoming Board of Trustees will consider elevating UW’s Honors Program to an Honors College during the board’s regular meeting Wednesday through Friday, May 10-12.

Trustees also will consider elimination of five low-enrollment academic programs; receive updates on strategic planning, budget matters, enrollment and plans for residence hall improvements; and discuss other issues. The full board meeting begins with committee reports at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Salons D and E of the Marian H. Rochelle Gateway Center.

Before the full board meeting, the trustees’ Budget Committee will conduct budget hearings for individual UW units starting at 8 a.m. Monday, May 8. The schedule for budget hearing presentations is here. The Budget Committee and other board committees will meet Wednesday morning in the Gateway Center.

And individual trustees will attend various UW commencement activities Thursday through Saturday.

The business meeting, in which trustees take formal action on agenda items, is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday. All meetings are open to the public except for executive sessions.

Public testimony will be accepted at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

The concept of transitioning the existing Honors Program to an Honors College was favorably received by the Board of Trustees during its March meeting, and a full proposal is scheduled to go before the board at 9:30 a.m. Friday. The proposal calls for changing the honors minor to a concurrent major or part of a major in all fields of study; gradually expanding the Honors College faculty and staff to accommodate more students; and, in general, developing a curriculum that would better prepare students for professional or graduate school success. A dean would be appointed to lead the unit.

Discussion of academic program elimination is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, preceded by discussions on the budget, residence halls and enrollment.

The complete agenda is available at www.uwyo.edu/trustees/2017-meeting-materials/may_10-12_2017_meeting.html.

Public sessions of the full board will be streamed online at https://zoom.us/j/381140209?pwd=&status=success.
